As a runner that only joined the family in 2016, you very often hear the more mature runners reminiscing about races that got cancelled in South Africa and have completely disappeared from the running calendar… from there our History Series is born!!! We invite you to join us on this journey down memory lane…
Jock – a bull terrier – was born in the present day Kruger National Park near the Pretorius Kop Camp. He was the runt of the litter and the young Percy Fitzpatrick saved him from certain death by adopting him as a pup.
Percy became a transport rider – carting supplies for the goldfields at Pilgrim’s Rest and Barberton from Delagoa Bay (now Maputo).
Jock grew up to be a faithful and obedient companion, as well as a champion fighter and hunter. Jock accompanied Percy on his journeys through the KNP, as well as through the towns of Sabie, Graskop, Pilgrim’s Rest, Barberton and Lydenburg.
Jock permanently lost his hearing when a kudu antelope cow kicked him. When Percy went to live in Barberton, he realised Jock was miserable living in a town and gave the dog to his friend Tom Barnett who ran a supply store in what became Mozambique. One night Tom mistakenly shot Jock because he was thought to be the dog killing chickens on the farm (when Jock had meantime already killed the other intruding dog). A statue of Jock can be found in Barberton!!!
The Jock of the Bushveld Ultra used to be ran on the R37 between Sabie and Nelspruit
